Background

Roman Voznesensky-Talleday grew up in Essex, raised by his single father, Police Officer Rediko Voznesensky.

Red is himself a former Balerino, the son of a famed Prima Ballerina who went on to instruct at a prestigious Ballet School bearing their name, and also happened to be a Pretty Cure in his youth. Rediko recognised immediately what was happening in his son's life.

Knowing that Roman also had a lot of work to do before he could meet his full potential, the decision was shortly made to send him abroad to Radiant Hearts Academy. This decision, as well as the awareness Roman now has of his father's past, has only added further strain to their relationship.

Though Roman is a well meaning and compassionate boy, he is also cocksure and energetic, and tends to struggle with working in a team. Headstrong and fiercely protective of others, he has a long history of standing up to bullying and going out of his way to help people, especially the elderly in his community.

Unfortunately, Roman's school record has been somewhat tainted by his absences, as well as instances of fighting and apparent vandalism. He was described as a lackadaisical and flippant student, albiet popular with many of his peers.

He started working for an elderly couple who ran an old Cafe near his former school, interested in earning money for new sneakers. Despite not taking this job seriously at first, he quickly grew closer to the owners, who took a fondness to him for a similarity to their own son. Bonding with them, Roman began to help them out more and more, taking more responsibility in their store as age began to catch up to them.

He became a skilled Barista during this time, and learned to serve their house specialty: Pink Chai.

It was this job that would ultimately lead him to becoming a Pretty Cure, following a robbery of the Cafe. Roman, who had been walking home later in the evening, noticed unusual activity and commotion from the building as he passed it and--using his key--went to investigate and intervene. Armed only with a Baseball Bat, he would give chase to what he believed were the intruders, only to discover that these were interlopers from another world entirely.

Their target, as it happened, had been one of the scattered Leaves of Sweet Aroma-- a sacred leaf from the Aroma Kingdom, once responsible for the Eternal Sweet Aroma that bolstered resilience, rejuvinated and calmed people, and led the Kingdom to peaceful prosperity. Approached by a Fairy of that Kingdom, Darjeela, Roman discovered the existence of the Dark Roast. This organisation seeks to embitter people, render them restless, and drive them into a deep sense of unhappiness and malaise.

Upon the discovery that the elderly couple's ailing health must also be related, and understanding the dangers presented, Roman's will to help led to him becoming Cure Chai. He embodies the bond he formed with others in his community, the passing of knowledge from old to young, and stands as a symbol of resilience, peace, and good health.

As Roman heads off to Tokyo, Rediko remains in Essex, watchful for any further Cures who may be yet to emerge in the area.

Personality

Roman is an energetic and cheeky young man who, despite his sometimes lackadaisical nature, is possessed of a hard-headed and strong will. He is outgoing and enjoys sports, and often rides a BMX bike to get around and to amuse himself (and crashes it in failed tricks nearly as often).

He's not entirely pleased with his Cure Motif, and sometimes laments that he became associated with a Tea theme as he feels it isn't overly impressive.

Roman's a fairly sociable and popular young man, but despite this, he failed to keep long term friendships his age. He's always been something of a drifter between groups, doing his own thing at his own pace. As a child, he had a very close friend that moved away, and upon that boy's leaving, the pair traded their Tamagotchi toys to remember one another by. As such, it's one of Roman's prized possessions.

Though Roman is quite soft hearted underneath, he tends to put up a bit of a front, as is typical of his age. He is cocky and sometimes boistrous, quick to make a joke of something rather than take it too seriously. For this reason, he can sometimes come across as immature. However, he's also quick to help strangers, and to take on the burdens or responsibilities of those who can't complete them.

Unfortunately, Roman can be easily frustrated at times, and show flashes of hot-headedness. He struggles with his schoolwork and learning Japanese has been difficult for him. He's steeped in a culture shock that threatens to leave him isolated, if he doesn't start working well with others.

One of Roman's biggest strengths is his enduring determination. He is not the sort of boy who gives up easily, and he is largely an optimist. Though he sometimes doubts himself, feeling the shadow of his father's own previous achievments as a Cure, Roman wants to prove himself and protect the people around him.

Focus

Roman is Cure Chai, a Pretty Cure with a motif based on Pink Chai Tea. His theme is Making Connections, Understanding, Passing on Knowledge, Rejuvination, Good Health and Resilience.

He derives his magic from Darjeela, a member of the Royal Court in the Kingdom of Aroma, whose power resides in a jewel-bearing golden teaspoon. Roman uses this in conjunction with a Tea Set in order to both Transform and to unlock Power Ups.

Style

As a Pretty Cure, Cure Chai wears an extravagant white and pink outfit in a loose Ouji Fashion style, reflecting a Tea Motif. He fights with magical and melee attacks.

Powers

As Cure Chai, Roman's abilities showcase a variety of heat and steam based attacks, including a scalding mist that may also be useful for obscuring vision or making a small area incredibly hot. He can weild this steam in pressurised bursts and concentrated attacks, easily able to cause burns. His melee is augmented by this magic, alongside the strength and endurance that enables a Pretty Cure to fight.

He has a stirring attack, this creates a whirlpool effect around him if used in in bodies of water. Using this is called the Milky Turn attack, which can produce a wave effect to buffet enemies or trap somebody in the current. As a magical effect, the effected liquid takes on the appearance of pink milk.

He possesses a sound based attack reminiscent of a kettle whistling, in which Roman's whistle creates a small sonic boom. He can utilise this as a minor shockwave, or as a temporary deafening effect to stun. He calls this Kettle Krash.

He has the ability to release a bubble-like attack, based on boiling heat and motion. It is unleashed as an explosive attack that forms outwards from his body, called Boiling Blast. This is primarily a knockback effect.

As an advanced technique (or finisher), Roman can utilise his Teacup and Teaspoon to stir up a combination, unleashing a Purifying jet of tornadic pink Steam. This is launched in a swirling, cannon like fashion if performed with others or as a finisher. Otherwise, the swirling steam typically envelopes a limb, and transfers upon physical connection (punches, kicks, or otherwise).

With his team mate, Cure Matcha, he is able to to perform a special Purification Finisher; the two dance together and pose, summoning a giant tea pot covered in camellias around an enemy. Into this teapot a giant teabag descends to pin them in place, as the lid closes over and their darkness is boiled away as steam that shoots from the spout in pink and green colours. This attack is called Tag-team Teapot.
