Rei Hino's Sheet

Background

Rei Hino is the reincarnation of the Princess of Mars from thousands of years ago, when magic flowed freely. That time is like a dream to her, at best. The memories are as though they are just a story about somebody else, not her. Despite that, there is an undeniable connection. One strong enough that she has inherited the spiritual abilities that her former life possessed.

Rei's mother died when she was still a child after a period of severe sickness. Her father, an aspiring politician, never even came to visit his wife during that time. He was more concerned with his career, and simply sent Rei off to live with her grandfather at the Hikawa Shrine so she wouldn't be a distraction.

Rei has grown to be very independent by necessity. While her grandfather loves her, he is old and focused primarily on the upkeep of the shrine. She walks to school by herself, completes her homework by herself, cleans and tends the temple grounds by herself, and keeps herself safe. This last is especially important, as Tokyo has become very dangerous lately.

Rei Hino used to attend a private elite school, segregating her even further from her peers, and even there was regarded as distant, cold, or difficult to approach by other students, despite her appearance. On top of that, rumors about her 'strange powers' have further made her seem strange and distant; Rei has some manner of precognative ability, though not really under her control, which lead to her being further segragated. But upon meeting Usagi, and forming connections with the other Sailor Senshi, she found many things; an explanation for her strange powers, a group of allies she could rely on, and most importantly... friends.

Personality

Rei has been, from a young age, trained to put on a mask - to perform. Her natural passion has been hindered; first by the expectations of a Japanese politican's daughter to be seen and not heard, and secondarily by her time as a Shrine Maiden, distant from family and expected to be serene and graceful.

This is not who Rei is, deep down, but an artifact of her upbringing. Within her, the fire of passion flares, and she's just spent most of her life keeping it quiet. Rei cares, deeply, for her friends and allies, for this world, for Japanese culture, for all of that. It's just a side of her she can only feel letting out when she's among people she's comfortable with - to those who don't know her, she remains a bit of an ice queen. It's only with true friends that she can be herself; loud, passionate, sometimes angry, feeling every emotion loudly. And as Sailor Mars, she has no reason to temper any of it - and feels truly free to let loose, making the version of her in henshin almost seem the opposite.

Rei's compassion is one of her strongest aspects. She will put herself in the way of danger to save others, and won't back down if challenged when innocent lives are on the line. While it is difficult to befriend her, those who do will have a friend for life.

Rei is usually quite practical, and has excellent life skills for her age. She is self-sufficient, and values this about herself. She doesn't go looking for a man to help her move furniture or anything like that. In fact, she doesn't go looking for men in general. Thanks to her appalling father, and an experience with another man she once fancied who abandoned her to advance his career, Rei has major mistrust towards men. It isn't that she can never trust any man or that she thinks they are all bad people... But there's no way for her to know for sure whether a man is actually a good person, or if they are only acting like one and more betrayal and disappoint is waiting further down the line. She is aware that she starts off with an unfair perspective towards men and is working on it as a form of self-improvement; especially spending time with Mamoru Chiba has shown her that her experiences are not universal.

Rei has a lot of mixed up emotions regarding her father. Anger and resentment, the wish for him to be the father she wanted instead of the one she got, the vague desire for approval and an intact family, and also absolute disgust that being a politician is of greater importance than Rei's mother to the same man who loved her enough to marry her. In general, she is happy enough to not have him in her life, and doesn't give much thought to her father unprompted, beyond her subconscious mistrust.

When Rei loves, she may seem distant on the outside, but within, she does so passionately and recklessly. When she grieves, she may seem an immovable stone in public but in private it's clear that it shakes her very soul. She feels everything intensely, even as she bottles it up. If someone is messing with her grandfather, their shrine, her crows Phobos and Deimos, her friends, the other Senshi, or really anyone at all that she has allowed into her heart, it is a losing proposition for the offending party. While her anger is a source of strength, so is that love, and an explosion of emotion is due to come soon after. Whether it's a useful emotion or not isn't certain. She, like the other Sailor Senshi, have much room to grow and improve as people.

Focus

Like other Sailor Senshi, her henshin item/focus is the Mars Pen.

Style

A Sailor Soldier, and her fuku colors are primary red, secondary purple, and her footwear is high heels.

Powers

As a reincarnation of the Princess of Mars, the former Sailor Mars, Rei has suppressed memories of her former life. However, they are like dreams more than true recollections, and she does not actually feel like she 'is' that princess. The other Mars is more like a story about another person from long ago. Still, the power of a Senshi is the same, and the highly spiritual nature of the Senshi of Mars in the past has been carried down the line to Rei in the form of seemingly psychic abilities.

Presence Sense

Rei can sense the presence of evil, whether intent or supernatural. This, combined with a general spiritual awareness and precognition, can provide her with a sort of 'danger sense'. She doesn't always know WHAT the danger is (she frequently doesn't), or when or where it will appear, but she may get a 'bad feeling' that could result in changing her path away from danger - though practically, especially since becoming a Sailor Senshi, she runs *towards* that danger. It isn't a fool-proof 'get out of danger free card', and can be just as vague as a normal person's 'hunches'. It is simply that the reliability of her hunches is clearly extraordinary and often paranormal.

Fire Reading

Rei Hino can, as a Fire Priestess, also perform a 'Fire Reading' at the Hikawa Shrine. This can give her additional insight by meditating in front of the fire, and searching for answers or more information to a question. It takes time and doesn't always work, but the bounds of her precognition and senses can be vastly amplified. If a truly terrible threat is coming, she may receive visions without any form of prompting or meditation. The more extreme the danger, the more likely she will have a nightmare or flash of images in her mind to warn her about it. The details, as always, are vague and open to interpretation.

Ofuda

The final element of Rei's spiritural abilities is that she can use ofuda (sealing talismans). She can produce and wield them at nearly superhuman speed, accurately throwing them singly or in large numbers, and they are effective as a means of purging evil or corruption. This usually means paralyzing beings of evil, or driving out a possessing force from a mortal host. They can also be set up around an area to ward off evil with a spiriual barrier, but continuous concentration is required to maintain it and a strong enough or persistent enough force will overwhelm them eventually. She can weild these ofuda in and out of henshin (but they are much stronger backed up by Sailor Mars' power).

Sailor Mars

Rei Hino is able to transform into Sailor Mars, a superhuman version of herself with strength, speed, agility, and durability far beyond even peak human ability. This comes with effectively the standard Mahou/Senshi resistance to damage and abilities. Rei only has access to her transformation for as long as she has both her transformation wand and the desire to be Sailor Mars. A weak will can not sustain a Sailor Senshi. Thankfully, Rei is not one who lacks for willpower, but having the right mind-set and a strong enough heart are still vital for being Sailor Mars and for continuing to grow stronger.

Attacks

The elemental power of the red planet, Mars, grants Sailor Mars attacks of flame.

Fire Soul: By bringing her hands together and collecting power at the tips of her fingers, Sailor Mars can summon a condensed ball of flame, which roars towards the targets (and often anyone near them) in a fireball.

Burning Mandala: By dragging her finger through the air and letting the fire follow it, she creates a ring of fire which collects into a series of fireballs, before bringing her hands forward and calling the Aria, shooting out a series of fireballs towards the opponent.
